Heavy Haulage

Braithwaite Excavations own and operate low loader tractor units and trailers which allows us to transport all of our plant to all of our sites anywhere in the country and to undertake heavy plant haulage for other contractors.

The smallest items of plant weigh around 18 tonnes with the heaviest being the large crusher which weighs 53 tonnes. All plant moves are submitted using the ESDAL system by our Plant Manager where approved plant routeing is returned and passed on to the low loader drivers.

We own and operate our own fleet of MAN tipper wagons which generally work out of our base in Barnsley and service local jobs for aggregates and spoil off site.

We also own two inert restoration sites in West Yorkshire where all the inert spoil taken from our local sites is deposited.

We can also offer disposal services for other contractors on a cart and tip basis if the materials are proven to be suitable for our restoration sites. We have trained Managers and WAMITAB personnel that ensure compliance for our sites which are fully permitted by the Environment Agency for the importation of materials and the management of the sites in general.

EARTHWORKS PHILOSOPHY – SUSTAINABILITY

“It is the stated aim of this company to undertake works where the majority of site won materials can be either reused directly or can be processed by on site methods to allow their incorporation within the works.”

Ground Improvement

Braithwaite Excavations along with their specialist partners undertake a wide variety of ground improvement methods where the condition of a site requires these to be undertaken.

Lime modification is utilised to dry out materials that are too wet for normal earthwork operations. This allows materials to be used on site that would normally be unsuitable and would have to be taken off site to landfill.

Cement modification is undertaken to strengthen the soils encountered on site. Cement is incorporated in to the soils using specialist plant which increases the strength of the soils which means less stone is needed to cap the site. The cement treatment can also be used to allow more of the site materials to be utilised which reduces the need for materials to be taken off site to landfill and stone imported to site.

Rapid impact compaction is a technique undertaken on poorly consolidated sites such as backfilled ash pits or former open cast sites. These sites are former industrial sites where any backfilling has been undertaken without compaction meaning the ground has to be improved either by piling or by the use of rapid impact compaction to allow for building on the site. This is a much more complicated type of improvement works and requires detailed site investigation works and prior testing but it can offer significant cost savings against traditional piled solutions.

All ground improvement works require a fully detailed site investigation to be undertaken to determine if the materials can be improved and to allow for accurate cost assessments to be submitted to the Client to determine if this is the best way forward. In most cases the use of ground improvement offers significant cost savings to the Client.

Site Remediation

Site remediation normally refers to works on existing industrial sites where buildings have or will be demolished which will leave the concrete floor slabs, services yards , car parks and all foundations in place.

The remediation is to remove all these materials and to process them on site by means of crushing and screening for reuse within the works.

Excavators fitted with hydraulic breakers are used to break up the surface concrete and tarmac. The materials will be excavated and taken to areas of the site where they will be stockpiled for crushing and screening. The same process will be applied to all buried foundations uncovered beneath the removed slabs.

A cut and fill earthworks operation normally follows with the site formed to the new levels for the replacement buildings.
The concrete and tarmac will be processed to a sizing detailed in the works specification and this processed material will be used as a capping layer to the new construction.

Remediation works allow for the reuse of materials on site which prevents costly disposal of materials off site to landfill and the import of stone materials from quarries or other sources.

Braithwaite Excavations have invested heavily in remediation equipment for the redevelopment of brown field sites.

The plant and equipment owned and operated by Braithwaite Excavations Ltd have been specifically chosen with this statement in mind.

Within the last few years state of the art recycling equipment has been purchased to complement our earthworks fleet. This includes reversible jaw tracked crushers with hydraulic jaw settings and tracked bulk production screens.

The portfolio of completed works underlines our track record in site reclamation and remediation over the last few years.

The development of the last few years is based on over thirty years experience within the Civil Engineering field. The Company can claim completed major road works on some of the largest UK roads and motorways such the M25, M54 and South Devon Trunk Road as well as more recent works on the Aldi distribution network.

40+

Braithwaite Excavations have been undertaking major earthwork projects for over 40 years and have a proven track record for delivering high quality works on time and to budget. This has allowed us to develop close relationships with our Clients and to undertake repeat work on their projects for many years.

Our works are managed by experienced and dedicated staff who control our sites to ensure the works are progresses to programme and specification.

Our drivers and operators are all trained in line with industry standards.
The plant fleet is modern and made up from Caterpillar and Volvo.

All our works are carried out using GPS machine control. Our Engineers produce 3 dimensional earthwork models which are uploaded onto our machines which allows the machine guidance to be utilised. This offers large increases in site productivity and quality.

The 3 d modelling also allows us to provide Clients with the best earthworks solutions for sites by undertaking adjustment of levels to give earthworks balances which provides the most cost effective solution to the project for our Clients and prevent the unnecessary movement of materials on and off site.
